UK inbound and stay at home tourism is a growing recent success story, and has continued to buck the tough economic climate over recent years, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and VisitBritain, the UK’s national tourism authority.

A number of key indicators continue to underline the growing potential of this sector:
• Overseas visitor numbers to the UK continue to rise strongly year on year
• The volume of quality self catering accommodation stock is growing in all areas of the UK
• More people are buying holiday lets, or converting old accommodation stock into new quality self-catering accommodation, as a store for funds and as a means of long term investment

Data from the ONS shows that overall during the peak periods in 2013, the UK saw a rise of 16% in the number of visitors enjoying a UK break. It’s not just UK visitors opting for the ‘Staycation’ option which is helping to propel the strong growth in numbers. Overseas visitors to the UK are also up, with an increasing number seeking the benefits offered by staying in quality self-catering accommodation. Those arriving from outside Europe and North America jumped even more impressively by 28% - the highest level for a single month.

VisitBritain chief executive Sandie Dawe said: “More people than ever from around the world are choosing to holiday in Britain, with record numbers coming from the high spending markets of Latin America, Middle East and Asia Pacific. This all adds up to a new milestone of spend over a 12 month period of £20 billion, which proves the massive contribution that inbound tourism makes to the UK economy.”
